Facilitators - Prescott, AZ
We volunteer with the MISS Foundation in honor of our sweet son,
Liam, who died during open-heart surgery in October 2002. He
was 7½ weeks old and brought our family so much joy during his
short time here on earth. Liam has 3 older siblings, who
love him very much: Sarah, 17; Travis, 15 and Margaret, 11. Career
wise Douglas and I are both in the social services field, providing
vocational/educational services to individuals with disabilities. Douglas
is an administrator for the social services agency we work for
and Heidi is an aspiring writer.J
Like most bereaved families, we never imagined ourselves being
a part of such an organization, but MISS has been such a lifeline
to us. We find that helping others who are in our shoes,
helps to soothe a small part of the empty space that we all must
come live with, day to day. When we land on this road, by
no choice of our own, we need a place where we can honor the memory
of our dear children, in the presence of others who speak our language. MISS
is that “place”. We hope to reach out to as many local bereaved
parents as possible and help them to feel a little bit less "alone". We
also hope to educate healthcare and mental health professionals,
emergency personnel, clergy, community leaders and extended family
members about the immediate crises within the bereaved family,
and how they can best provide the support those families need.
We attended the 2003 MISS Conference and were truly inspired! We
look forward to taking on the important work of MISS volunteers,
with gratitude to those who have helped and supported us so much.
