The participation in giving a Quilt Square in honor of your child is a healing and helpful way to show the world our loved ones matter. The following tips will help you make multiple squares. You don’t have to SEW! No need to give up anything of your child’s, we will create keepsakes to share. I will start with instructions for our son Joel’s quilt square shown: it is an easy scrapbook technique, then colored copied, then transferred to fabric to make a quilt square. A special color copy machine is used to transfer images to fabric.
I took my favorite baby blanket of Joel’s and color copied the blanket – reducing the pattern of the bears about 50%. I used this color copy paper as the background to the square. I used a reprinted actual photo in the center, cutting out a border of colored paper to frame the photo. On the computer I made a name, date label printed in a font size that fit the scale of the square. Next steps: glue-stick the background paper, boarder, photo and label together to make a “paper” square. I took the paper square to our local Kinko’s Copy Center to have a professional “photo” transfer made. I cut a light color, all cotton fabric 2 or 3 times the size of the square to have the transfer applied to this fabric. Take as many pieces of fabric as you would like “copies” of your square. Kinko’s made the transfer and applied it in reverse (to show lettering correct) to my fabric, each square cost about $10.00 for this process. I then layered the transferred square with a thin batting and a backing fabric. I outlined Joel’s name with embroidery and sewed on a couple of heart buttons to the square. Trimmed all layers to the 6 ć x 6 ć inch size for the MISS memory quilt requirements. Design is 6 inch square plus ć inch allowance around for attaching square to main quilt. Any questions or ideas?
